Submitting a One Call System Locate Request

The month of April has been designated as National Safe Digging Month. Each blog post this month will focus on the One Call system. Continue reading to find out what happens after you submit a locate request.

Once all the locate information has been taken by an 811 customer service representative or entered online, the request is processed by the call center computer system and transmitted to member utilities that have underground facilities at the dig site within a matter of minutes.

Member utilities receive the locate request by fax, email or by direct telephone notification and they have two days to complete the locate. In some cases, the utility may be able to determine from the information that it has no underground facilities at the dig site. In these cases, the members will notify you that they are clear.

When marking underground utilities, workers use different colored flags or paint. Below is a chart detailing what each color signifies.
