Dear Customers,

It is a good feeling to welcome spring following the recent frigid temperatures we have experienced.

This month, I want to share with you important information from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) about an upcoming change to locally dialed calls.

The FCC has adopted “988” as a new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline. The use of this new three-digit number will begin on July 16, 2022. (Until then, customers must continue to dial 1-800-273-TALK to reach the Lifeline.) For the 988 number to work in the 660 and 816 area codes, you will soon have to dial all local calls to numbers in these area codes as a 10-digit number instead of a 7-digit number.

Customers may begin dialing 10 digits for local calls starting April 24 of this year. Beginning October 24, 2021, all local calls to these area codes must be dialed with 10 digits. Please know, local calls will remain local calls – dialing 10 digits will not incur long distance charges. Long distance calls will still be made using 1 + 10 digits.

Customers affected by the 10-digit dialing are those whose area code is 660 and 816. It includes all our Missouri GRM Networks and LTC Networks phone customers. This will also affect our customers in Iowa who can call 660 numbers as a local number. These exchanges are Blockton, Lamoni, Davis City, Lineville, Leon and Allerton.

The 10-digit dialing will also affect cell phone calls, automatic dialing equipment and other services that are programmed to currently use 7-digit dialing. Some examples of this include life safety systems or medical monitoring devices, PBXs, fax machines, fire or burglar alarm and security systems or gates, speed dialers, mobile or other wireless phone contact lists, call forwarding settings, voicemail services and other similar functions. Customers with questions about their wireless service should contact their wireless provider.

Please refer to the information found in this newsletter as well as the last page of our March invoice to learn about 10-digit dialing and how it affects you. As always, we are here to help you. Please contact your local business office with any questions:
